SCBA seeks reforms in accountability law to avoid abuses of power
SCBA highlighted the need for legislative policy changes to the National Accountability Ordinance as well as strengthened NAB officers training programs.
On Wednesday Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) highlighted the need for legislative policy changes to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) as well as strengthened NAB officers training programs to prevent the anti-graft watchdog’s abuse of power.
Syed Qalb-i-Hassan, SCBA president said, “The integrity and reputation of an institution that is responsible for the country’s accountability should be up to the mark and must follow the highest standards set globally for such institutions of fundamental importance.”
The SCBA president said that NAB was established for the purpose of curbing corruption and malpractices at the highest level and for establishing the rule of law across the board, but the procedure adopted by the bureau had raised questions in prudent minds of society about the methodology of arrest, inquiries, investigations and delayed trials.
Moreover, the arrest of suspects without collection of evidence had become a norm and the trend of searching evidence for justifying the arrest had become the order of the day, he maintained.
Belated accusations, he said, against different people and inquiries spreading over years without their finalisation were against fundamental constitutional rights of the citizens.
He opined that the most important and fundamental rights, including the right to liberty were being compromised due to non-professional approach of officials of the bureau.
